My Influences

YouTube Channels

I watch more YouTube than is healthy. I won’ t include every channel I enjoy, only those that occasionally change my opinions.

Tom Scott–excellent short videos that are guaranteed to interest me. He has a way of simplifying IT discussions and problem solving generally.

Lock Picking Lawyer–there isn’t a calmer voice on the internet. He picks locks and is a lawyer. Worth watching.

Samuel Gold –American Football analysis that emphasis the scouting and strategy of the game. Accessible to new fans, but continues to teach me new aspects of the game.

Modern History TV— investigates the medieval world. We aim to test out what it was actually like. Books are great but getting out and trying things is even better. Jason owns and trains his own horses, fights in medieval armour and tests people’s theories to destruction.

Tiny Desk–In a rut? Try a band you’ve never heard of. I like > 60% of what I hear.

Joshua Weissman–My cooking guru over the last two years. His videos generally use simple ingredients and aren’t too long. Also, don’t pass up the B-roll.

Townsends- A channel dedicated to exploring the 18th Century lifestyle. Politically easier to swallow than most homesteading content online with great history lessons.

Podcasts

I listen to a ton of podcasts, some more embarrassing than others. The few listed below are the most likely to change my thinking. My podcast preferences change more than any other medium.

Cautionary Tales— episode for episode, it’s my favorite podcast. Tim Harford perfectly weaves stories and lessons together in 45 minutes. I reference this podcast in at least one discussion a month.

FiveThirtyEight Politics–Generally data-driven analysis of current political events. Nate Silver and co. keep the discussion lively and interesting. Cover the topics that interest me in current politics.

Strict Scrutiny –A podcast that covers current Supreme Court Cases and culture. The hosts share their personal and professional opinions about each case and keep it interesting.

Exponent–challenges every prior I’ve had about IT and its governance. Brilliant minds discussing topics that we interact with daily.

Dinner Party Download–This hasn’t been on air in years, but Rico and Brendan ushered me into Podcasts. The topics remain relevant and I reference it years later.

Wabash College Chapel Talks–Not religious. A weekly talk from my alma mater on a range of topics, frequently covers pedagogical needs of young men.

Individual Artifacts

Haworth Connect: The Coddling of the American Mind— A video on the current trends driving anxiety and depression in the student-aged population with lessons on how to be Anti-fragile.

Explaining Experience Management–Experience will be the last differentiator. I found this article a helpful primer for an organization.
